This public reading is the central moment of Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast\, a full day of Revolutionary history\, community participation\, demonstrations\, music\, family activities\, and historic sailing vessels stretching from Brown Square to the waterfront. \nThe Museum of Old Newbury\, in partnership with the Custom House Maritime Museum\, Lowell’s Boat Shop\, the First Religious Society\, Theater in the Open\, the City of Newburyport\, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce\, and many more community partners\, will present Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast on Sunday\, July 19\, 2026\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Newburyport. \nThroughout the day\, Revolutionary townsfolk\, soldiers\, sailors\, demonstrations\, and three historic sailing vessels will bring the past to life\, along with family activities from Brown Square to the waterfront from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Period activities will include artillery and musket demonstrations\, arts\, crafts\, printing\, cooking\, and tattooing experiences. These activities are designed to build toward the 2 p.m. reading in Market Square and then carry the commemoration forward to the waterfront. \nSponsored in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) as part of the statewide MA250 campaign. \nAt a glance \nWhat: A public commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Newburyport’s first reading of the Declaration of Independence\, centered on a community reading in Market Square at 2 p.m.\, with music\, reenactors\, family-friendly activities\, a waterfront salute by three historic vessels\, and more. \nWhen: Sunday\, July 19\, 2026. Activities take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The procession begins at 1:45 p.m. at Brown Square\, leading to the central 2 p.m. reading and commemorative program in Market Square. Waterfront activities and public access to the vessels continue until 5:30 p.m. \nWhere: Brown Square to Market Square\, with a stop at the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church\, followed by a waterfront observance and family-friendly activities. \nIncludes: A community reading of the Declaration of Independence\, Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, and colonial-era townspeople\, ceremonial music and salutes\, the arrival of the Schooner Ardelle\, the Schooner Isabella\, and the Pinnace Virginia\, a replica of Maine’s oldest ship\, privateers on board\, public access to all three vessels until 5:30 p.m.\, and activities for families. \nOn July 19\, 1776\, the people of Newburyport assembled at the Meetinghouse then standing in Market Square to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud for the first time. In the aftermath of that extraordinary moment\, patriot and future Senator Tristram Dalton wrote to Elbridge Gerry\, “The die is cast. All is at stake. The way is made plain.” \nThat plain way was not peace\, comfort\, or certainty. It was sacrifice. War had already touched Newburyport for more than a year\, but the Declaration transformed resistance into resolve. It proclaimed before the world that Americans were entitled to “Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness\,” and most Newburyporters were prepared to defend those rights at any cost. \nTwo hundred and fifty years later\, Newburyport will gather again to remember that turning point in the life of the town and the nation. The day’s activities will lead toward the same place and hour at which the meaning of the commemoration comes most clearly into focus: Market Square at 2 p.m. The day will begin with Revolutionary programs and demonstrations throughout downtown\, and at 1:45 p.m. a procession will depart from Brown Square\, travel to Market Square\, and include a stop at the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church. At 2 p.m.\, the public commemoration will begin in the heart of downtown. This anniversary observance invites the public to stand where earlier generations stood and to hear once more the words that changed the course of our history. \nThe 2 p.m. program will bring together neighbors and friends\, past and present\, along with Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, colonial-era townsfolk\, and special guests\, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. With music\, salutes\, and ceremonial observances\, the event will honor those who\, in 1776\, pledged to each other their “Lives\, Fortunes\, and sacred Honor” in the defense of liberty. \nFollowing the Market Square program\, participants will proceed to the waterfront to greet the arrival of three historic sailing vessels: the Schooner Ardelle\, the Schooner Isabella\, and the Pinnace Virginia\, a replica of Maine’s oldest ship. There\, the commemoration will continue with salutes by privateers on board\, recalling the maritime world in which Newburyport lived\, fought\, and sacrificed during the Revolution. All three vessels will remain in port and be available to the public until 5:30 p.m. \nAs the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast offers a chance not only to remember the past\, but to renew a shared civic promise. DESCRIPTION:American Rebels: The Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution…in Newburyport and Beyond.\n\n\n\nNewburyport’s Offin Boardman carried secret letters for John Adams\, who argued court cases in Newburyport. The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776\, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch\, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders\, across class lines and from all backgrounds\, had not joined the fight. John Hancock\, John Adams\, Abigail Adams\, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases\, acts of civil disobedience\, espionage\, community outreach)\, they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves\, their neighbors\, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the shared fight became a covenant\, and the rights of life\, liberty\, and pursuit of happiness\, the promise of independence. On the 250th anniversary of our nation\, we celebrate that covenant\, that promise\, and the men and women who made it all possible. \nNina Sankovitch is an avid historian and voracious reader. DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n\nSongs\, stories\, theatrics\, and an epic “crankie” panorama bring Newburyport’s Revolutionary taverns to life. Come raise a glass with us!\n\n\n\nAt the end of a landmark privateering symposium\, what is there left to do but repair to the tavern? In Revolutionary Newburyport\, taverns were more than places to drink. They were the town’s patriot headquarters\, where news from other embattled towns was shared\, committees met\, captains were recruited\, merchants and investors negotiated\, and neighbors argued politics\, prizes\, and the price of independance. They were also the original entertainment venues\, alive with songs\, fiddles\, ballads\, recitations\, sketches\, and the kind of convivial spectacle that helped a crowded port blow off steam\, build connections\, and keep morale up through a bleak winter at war. \nJoin Edward Speck (Theater in the Open)\, Bethany Groff Dorau (Museum of Old Newbury)\, The Portermen (Newburyport’s shanty and traditional music purveyors)\, and fiddler and hurdy-gurdy player Adrienne Howard for an evening that channels that 18th-century spirit: toasts\, music\, art\, theater\, silly human tricks\, and a show-stopping crankie (a moving panorama) featuring art by Alan Bull. Throughout the night\, historians in silly hats will pop up with quick tales and tidbits about tavern shenanigans\, from the rituals of drinking and song to the ways tavern rooms doubled as civic space when the Revolution came to town. When captures returned to port\, they could make fortunes. Instead\, the film places her at the center of her own story\, an abolitionist actively navigating the political\, economic\, and racial constraints of Revolutionary-era Boston.At the heart of the film is Phillis’s 1778 marriage to John Peters\, a free Black man\, entrepreneur\, and advocate who shared her belief in self-determination. DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers. The three-acre cemetery’s oldest stone is from 1705 and belongs to Mrs. Hannah Bartlett\, grandmother of Josiah Bartlett\, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Moses Little\, hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill\, also rests here\, along with numerous other men and women who lived through the American Revolution on “the Plains” in the west end of Newbury. \nImportant: Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The tour involves walking on uneven terrain. DESCRIPTION:“Road to Revolution” — a partnership exhibition with the Museum of Old Newbury \nThis exhibition is dedicated to the memory of our late curator Kevin MacDonald (1969-2025) \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism \nOn the road to and during the Revolutionary War\, Newburyport contributed greatly to the struggle for independence. The town contributed immediately to the war effort\, sending men to Concord and Bunker Hill. It staged the ill-fated Quebec  Expedition. An abundance of skilled shipwrights\, seasoned sailors\, savvy merchants\, ardent spirit and protected harbor\, made Newburyport into a hub for privateers thus helping to disrupt enemy shipping and supply lines. It built one of the 1st thirteen frigates for the nascent Continental Navy. Many paid the supreme sacrifice and more were imprisoned. \n1850’s Newburyport Waterfront Diorama: Created by David Vine and with research and assistance from Paul Henault\, Scott Nason and Sharon Spieldenner\, this remarkable diorama transports the visitor back to a time when merchant vessels docked along the many wharfs in the town. \nDedication of the USCG 4th Order Fresnel Lens\, on long term loan from the USCG \nPURCHASE TICKETS >>\nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism
